THE SOUND ALCHEMIST · ISSUE NO. 3 · GEMINI NEW MOON · JUNE 12, 2026

A New Moon letter on the racing mind, the science of sound, and a ritual for finding the quiet beneath the noise.

Beautiful spirit,

It has been two weeks since the last letter, and I have been listening — to the moon turning, to the rhythm of my own days, to what wants to be said next.

And as I'm writing to you now, I can already feel the quiet hum of the next New Moon approaching — gentle, watery, drawing inward. This particular New Moon, on Sunday June 14, is in Gemini, and it carries an energy that I think many of you have been waiting for, even if you haven't named it yet.

If you have felt scattered lately... if your thoughts have been running on too many tracks at once... if the news, the screen, the calendar, the next thing, the noise of this world has been pulling your attention into a hundred small pieces — beautiful one, this letter is for you.

The Gift of the Gemini New Moon

Gemini is ruled by Mercury — the planet of communication, ideas, and the agile mind. The Gemini archetype is the messenger, the curious one, the one who holds two truths at once. In her healthy expression, she is the bridge between knowledge and intuition, between question and listening. In her unhealthy expression, she is the racing mind that cannot land.

This particular New Moon offers us a sacred window to set intention around how our minds want to relate to themselves. And as the cosmos invite us into stillness around the realm of the mind, sound becomes one of the most direct medicines available to us.

✨ Because here is what I have learned, after years of holding sound space and listening to my own racing thoughts:

The mind cannot be quieted by force. It can only be invited into rest by something gentler than itself.

The Mind That Won't Stop

You know this place. The mind that won't stop replaying the conversation. The mind that won't stop scrolling. The mind that wakes you up at 3 AM with a list. The mind that has fourteen browser tabs of itself open while you are trying to be present with someone you love.

I lived in that mind for so much of my younger life. The questions ran one after the other — what if I had said it differently, what should I do tomorrow, what will they think, what am I missing, what am I missing, what am I missing. I thought this was simply who I was. I thought the busy mind was the price of being thoughtful, of caring, of being responsible.

It was not. It was the cost of never having been shown another way.

🌀 Modern neuroscience confirms what wisdom traditions have taught for centuries — the brain's default mode network (the chatty, narrative-making part of the mind) is what runs when we are not consciously engaged with something else. When this network is overactive — when we are constantly multitasking, doomscrolling, mentally pre-living tomorrow — we live in a state of low-grade nervous system activation.

Dr. Daniel Siegel, the interpersonal neurobiologist, calls this top-down processing run amok — the upper layers of the brain dominating the somatic, intuitive, embodied wisdom that lives in the body and the heart.

And the cost of this is not theoretical. It shows up in:

Fragmented attention — you cannot stay present with one thing long enough to be moved by it

Decision fatigue — by the end of the day, even small choices feel impossible

Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep — the mind takes over the moment you lie down

Disconnection from the body's signals — you do not notice hunger, fatigue, tension until they shout

A nervous system that never quite gets to rest — even on the days you call rest days

Sound Is the Gentler-Than-the-Mind

Sound bypasses thought.

📿 This is the simplest truth I can offer you, and it is also the most profound. When the vibrations of a crystal bowl, or a Tibetan bowl, or a kora wash over you, your brain cannot process them through narrative. Sound is not a story. Sound is a wave that meets you in the body before the mind can interpret it.

The default mode network quiets. The body softens. The heart becomes hearable.

This is what neuroscientists confirm and what every culture with sound healing traditions has always known: sound is connection to the pure language of spirit that the mind has been waiting for.

✨ And during the Gemini New Moon, when the cosmos themselves are inviting us to seed a new relationship with our thinking, sound becomes the bridge between intention and embodiment.

You can wish for quiet. Or you can listen to the bowls and let them carry you there.

Your Gemini New Moon Sound Ritual

🌙Find a quiet space sometime this weekend or early next week — ideally the evening of June 14, or any time in the three days that follow. The New Moon's energy is most potent in this window.

🌙Gather what you need: a comfortable place to lay or sit. An eye pillow or scarf to cover your eyes. A journal and pen for after. Headphones if you are listening to a recording — or any singing bowls you have at home.

🌙Set the intention. Before you begin, write at the top of a journal page: I am inviting my mind into rest. I am ready to listen beneath the noise.

🌙Ground with breath (3 minutes). Breathe in for 4 counts. Hold for 1. Out for 6. Hold for 1. Repeat 8 times. (8 is a number linked to the rhythm of breath and lunar cycles — let each exhale soften you further.)

🌙Let the sound carry you (20-30 minutes). Put on a sound meditation. You can use one of my recorded sound journeys — there are many on my YouTube channel and on Insight Timer, and they are gifted, no fee. Allow the sounds to flow through you. Do not try to think about anything. When thoughts arise — and they will — simply notice them without engaging, and let the sound take them.

🌙Listen for what arises (5 minutes after the sound). Stay in stillness. Do not reach for your phone. Do not move. What thought arrives that does not feel like your usual mental chatter? What is the slower thought beneath the fast ones?

🌙Write what comes. In your journal, write the slower thought. The one that arrived in the quiet. This is the seed your Gemini New Moon is offering you.

For the Facilitators Reading This

For those of you in this circle who are sound bath practitioners — and I know many of you are, or are training to be — a small offering specific to your work.

Your guests arrive with minds that are full. Almost all of them, almost every time. This is the room you are walking into.

And while it is tempting to think the medicine you bring is the bowls, the kora, the chimes — what your guests with full minds actually need is something different. They need space.

📿 The pauses, the slowing down, the taking off layers of built-up sound, the fluid breaks in your momentum — these are not interruptions. These are the medicine.

✨ When you pause to let a vibration settle — to let the full resonance of a tone be heard in completion before adding another — the body has the space to integrate what just moved through it. The vibration of a bowl doesn't only land while it is ringing. It lands in the moment after — when the body is finally quiet enough to feel what just happened, and the full mind has space to settle into the rest the resonance is offering.

👉🏽 The rhythm of your sound bath should mimic the slow, soft breath of your own regulated body. The way you pause between notes, the way you let a tone resonate to its natural completion, the way you take off layers when intensity is no longer serving — all of this expresses your nervous system through your instruments. Your guests' bodies feel it. Their breath begins to mirror yours.

Try this in your next session: when you strike a slow, resonant instrument — a single sustained tibetan bowl resonance, a long-held perfect 5th on your crystal bowls — listen for the moment the resonance has truly completed. You can layer other gentle sounds - nature, chimes, a crystal pyramid, but don't add more of the bowls, until the previous bowl resonance has fully arrived at its end. Notice what your own breath is doing in that pause. Notice what happens to the breathing in the room. This is one technique that can be used when the energy needs to settle even deeper.

Remember, this is not ordinary music. You will not lose your audience at the moment of pause. This is music to entrance and entrain. You are shaping the inner landscape and inner rhythm of your participants — and the pauses are where that shaping happens most deeply.

Living This Beyond the Ritual

Over the next two weeks — as the Gemini New Moon energy builds toward the Capricorn Full Moon on June 29 — return to this practice three or four times if you can. Each time, your mind will quiet more easily. Not because the mind has changed. Because you have trained yourself to find the doorway.

👉🏽 This is what sound alchemy is. Not the escape from the busy mind. The patient, repeated practice of returning to what is beneath it.

✨ You are not broken because your mind is busy. You are simply human, in a noisy world. And you have a medicine.
