The Sound Alchemist · Issue No. 7 · Leo Eclipse New Moon · August 12, 2026

Being seen without performing means letting people meet the real you rather than the practiced, polished version you have rehearsed. A Leo eclipse new moon reveals what your own brightness has been covering, the way an eclipse uncovers the sun's corona. Sound alchemy helps: toning, a sound bath, and a candlelit ritual let you express instead of perform.

Beautiful spirit,

On Wednesday, the moon slides directly in front of the sun. 🌙

For a few minutes, along a narrow ribbon of the earth — the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, the coasts of Spain and Portugal — the sky will go the color of dusk in the middle of the day. That path runs far from where most of us are standing. We will not see it with our own eyes. But the new moon it belongs to is ours, and so is what it has to teach.

Because here is what happens in those minutes of totality: the sun's corona becomes visible. That soft silver crown of light, streaming out around the darkened disc. It is always there. Every hour of every day, it is there. We simply cannot see it — because the bright face of the sun outshines it more than a million times over.

The corona does not appear during an eclipse. It is revealed.

The Gift of the Leo New Moon

Leo is the sign of the heart made visible. It governs creative courage, self-leadership, the willingness to be looked at. Leo does not ask you to be modest. It asks you to be known.

And a new moon is always a seeding — the dark, fertile beginning of something. But an eclipse new moon asks the question a little differently. Not how do I shine brighter? Instead: what in me is already luminous — and what has been outshining it?

Because most of us have a bright disc. It is the self we have practiced. The competent one, the composed one, the one who has it handled, the one who says the right thing at the right volume. And it works. That is precisely the trouble — it works well enough that we keep it running, year after year, long past the point where it started costing us something.

Underneath it, quieter and a million times fainter, is the corona. The way you actually laugh. The thing you love that you decided was not impressive enough to mention. The song you would play if no one were listening.

You might know this one by its symptoms:

You rehearse ordinary conversations beforehand.

You are most tired after the moments you were most on.

You have a real gift filed away under not serious enough to count.

Praise for the polished version of you lands strangely — like gifts arriving at the wrong address.

I know this one from the inside. I spent my girlhood at a piano, in competitions. I knew exactly how to compose myself after the music was over, how to appear like my life was a ray of sunshine. And to my fortune, I was able to channel the musical pieces in ways that moved my soul, and that translated to my audiences.

But when I got to college, I walked away from that entire world. Not because I had stopped loving music — because the culture around it had no room for the corona. There was no place in it for the part of me that played in order to be in union with my inner spirit, with this sense of unity consciousness that I didn't understand yet.

It took me a long while to understand that I had not left music at all. I had left the performance of it, and gone looking for the expression of it. Everything I do now lives on the other side of that turn. 🤍

What the Research Keeps Finding

Modern psychology has been circling this for forty years. In 1986, Dr. James Pennebaker, then a psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin, ran a study that has since been repeated hundreds of times. He asked people to write about their most difficult experiences — fifteen minutes a day, four days in a row. No advice. No therapy. No audience.

Months later, those writers were measurably healthier — fewer doctor visits, stronger immune markers. Researchers now call it the Pennebaker Paradigm.

This is particularly interesting, because the benefit never tracked with how well anyone wrote. Not grammar, not elegance, not craft. It tracked with honesty — with how truthfully a person let themselves say the thing. 🌀

Expression heals. Performance does not. They can look identical from the outside — and your body has never once been fooled.

Why Sound Reaches It First

Here is the difficulty with expressing yourself in words: the moment you reach for a word, you also reach for the judge. Is that too much? Is that accurate? Is that how I want to be understood? The editing begins before the sentence is even finished.

Sound goes underneath all of that. When you hum a single note, when you let a tone move through you and follow it with your breath, there is no vocabulary to get right and no sentence to construct. There is only the sound, and your body's honest response to it. 💿

Sound lets you express something before you have decided what it ought to be.

That is the whole gift of it. The bowls do not ask you to perform. They ask you to let yourself be moved — and being moved is the one thing the polished self has never known how to fake.

🌙 A Ritual for the Light Beneath the Light

Do this on the evening of Wednesday, August 12 — or any evening in the three days that follow, while the new moon window is still open.

Gather: a journal and pen, a blanket, headphones, one candle, and a beautiful sound bath recording you love.

🌙Let the bright thing step aside first. Turn off the overhead light and work by the single candle. Put the phone in another room. You are making a small totality — covering the obvious brightness so something fainter can come forward.

🌙Write your intention at the top of a fresh page, in your own hand:

I am willing to be seen as I actually am, and not as I have practiced being.

🌙Breathe, nine rounds. In through the nose for 4, hold for 1, out through the mouth for 6. The long exhale is what tells your nervous system it is safe to stop bracing.

🌙Tone for five minutes. Hum one low note. Let it wobble, let it drift, let it go where it wants. Do not aim for a beautiful sound — aim for a true one. Feel where it buzzes: chest, throat, the bones behind your face.

🌙Listen for twenty to twenty-five minutes. Lie down, headphones on, and play a beautiful sound bath recording — one that has moved you before. You need no instrument for this, and nothing to do with your hands. Let the sound arrive and keep arriving. Your only task is to notice what moves in you, without deciding whether it should.

🌙Write, do not compose. Fifteen minutes, in Pennebaker's spirit — messy, unedited, for no reader. Begin with: What do I do beautifully that I have never once counted? And who or what taught me it didn't count?

Then close the journal and let the candle burn a little longer. Nothing has to be decided tonight. Something only had to be seen.

For Those of You Who Hold the Room

For those of you in this circle who facilitate — and I know many of you do, or are training to — a small offering that belongs to this same moon.

There is a moment in nearly every sound bath where you can feel the room's attention gather toward you. The bodies have settled, the breathing has slowed, and something in the space turns and waits. You know the moment I mean.

And there is a quiet fork inside it. You can meet that gathered attention by showing what you can do — the layering you have worked hard for, the passage you know lands. Or you can meet it by continuing to listen.

Guests almost never remember your most impressive passage. They remember the moment you were most present.

Skill is not the enemy here — it is the reason you can be trusted with a room at all. Bowls that harmonize, an arc that carries people somewhere, hands that know what they are doing: all of it matters, and all of it is worth the months of training and the years of embodiment it takes. The question is not whether to play well. The question is who the playing is for.

Try this in your next session: choose one passage — only one — and play it exactly as you would if the room were empty. Nothing demonstrated. Nothing added because someone is listening. And play it as if you were playing it as a gift to the person you most love. Then notice two things: what happens in the room during it, and what happens in you.

Most facilitators find the same thing. It is the passage that goes deepest, and the one that cost them the least to give.

Your presence is the corona. Your skill is the disc. Both are real — but only one of them is what they came to feel.

If learning to work with that fork on purpose — the whole craft of shaping a sound bath, and the presence to hold what it opens — is something calling you, that is the heart of what I teach in the Level 1 certification. You can read about it here, whenever the time is yours.

Carrying This Forward

Over these next two weeks, as the moon fills toward the Pisces full moon at the end of the month 🌕, I want to offer you one small practice to carry.

Once a day, catch the moment you shift into the polished version of yourself. You will feel it as a small tightening — in the jaw, in the shoulders, in the pitch of your own voice. Do not correct it. Do not judge it. That self was built to protect you, and it did its job.

Simply notice — and then, if it feels safe, let one true sentence out anyway. One unrehearsed thing. That is how the corona comes forward: not in a grand unveiling, but in small uncovered moments, over and over, until being yourself stops feeling like a risk.

You are not waiting to become more. You are waiting for something to step aside.

Wherever this finds you, beautiful spirit — in a season of being very visible, or one of feeling entirely unseen — I want to offer you this reminder. 🤍

The light you were born with does not require improvement. It requires room. And you do not have to become brighter to be worth looking at — you only have to stop covering the part of you that was always the real radiance. 🕊

May you walk in peace & lightness,

COMMON QUESTIONS

What is sound alchemy?

Sound alchemy is using sound as a means of inner journeying — a way to reconnect with your authentic self and your own inner wisdom. It is a musical, relational craft: which tones are chosen, and how they move in relationship to one another and to the listener. It works through musical relationship rather than prescription, and what surfaces belongs to the listener.

What does it mean to be seen without performing?

To be seen without performing is to let people meet what is actually true in you rather than the composed self you have practiced. The practiced version is the sun's bright disc; the fainter light behind it is the corona, always there, simply outshone. Expression and performance can look identical from the outside — your body knows the difference.

What is an eclipse new moon?

An eclipse new moon is a new moon that falls in line with the sun, so the moon passes directly across it and casts a shadow along a narrow path of the earth. On August 12, 2026, that path crosses the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and the coasts of Spain and Portugal. In those minutes of totality, the sun's corona becomes visible.
